Grass Snake Project
The Trelusback conservation area contains many ponds, ditches, banks and other features ideal for the habitat normally used by Grass Snakes and other species. The shallow ponds and ditches are used each year by frogs for breeding and the surrounding wetland normally contains large numbers of frogs during the Summer months. In addition the site has good populations of voles, Slow worms, Palmate newts, Toads, Common lizards, Harvest Mice, Water Shrews and other small mammals.
The management of the site therefore takes into consideration the needs of the Grass Snake Natrix helvetica. For this reason compost heaps and piles of brash are left in sunny places to provide Grass Snakes with suitable areas to lay their eggs and for their hibernation. This species is found in Europe to the West of the Rhine river. East of the Rhine there is the Grass snake Natrix natrix.
